Collection: Strata

 Strata:- Inspired by Kilve Beach here in Somerset where the geological layers of shale,  limestone rock, blue lias, shingle and the ripples of waves on the sand, create myriad lines, slashes and scoring across the landscape. The colours fuse together, forming stripes and lines that wiggle, squiggle and squirm like worms rolling across a page.  

This range is made from marbled porcelain clay.   Porcelain clay resembles the silky smoothness of whipped cream and is like pulling silk stockings through a gold ring when it’s thrown. It is also temperamental, cracks when you so much as look at it and is notoriously difficult to throw thin.

 When marbled, two clays are wedged together - in this case white and black.  As the clay is thrown, different layers of clay pull up and mix together generating shades of grey with undertones of blue and pink.  Sinuous lines, blocks and scribbles are created exactly like the geological strata at Kilve  and Malham Cove, in my nativeYorkshire.
